At the annual Ranch Days  organized by Margie and Hugh B. McKeen at their ranch near Alma, volunteers including Catron and Grant County Extension Service agents, as well as agents from New Mexico State University, show elementary students from the region where their food comes from. Stations showed each group of students in rotation about churning butter, about horse-packing, about bees and plants, blacksmithing and archery, rifle shooting at targets, and a favorite with some and a yuck for others, sticking a gloved hand into one of a cannulated cow's stomachs to see how grass is digested by the bovines.

The theme of the educational outing each year is No Ranch, No Farm, No Food. The volunteer station managers engage the students in activities, while teaching them how life on a farm or ranch works.

Students travel from as far away as Lordsburg, Silver City, Duncan, Arizona and as close as Reserve and Glenwood.
