SCPD Lt. Jason Woods told the Silver City Town Council at its Tuesday, Aug. 20 meeting, the department has had no issues with ROVs. “We have stopped a handful here in town which have been the same ones we’ve stopped before.” Woods said. “Currently, the chief is coming up with an idea for a decal to be placed on the OHVs we do stop showing they are compliant with the ordinance.”

According to Rheganne Vaughn, Director of Government Affairs for the Universal Waste System in New Mexico, her company’s Silver City waste pickup operation will begin Sept. 2. She said the company is fully prepared and staff is becoming familiar with Silver City streets. She also stated drivers are being cleared this week and will complete driver safety training next week. Post cards will be mailed out to residents this week explaining the new system, Vaughn said.

Council approved a special dispenser permit application for alcohol sales near a church for the Carnitas, Musica y Mas Festival from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, 2019, at Gough Park. Alcohol service will be from 5-11 p.m. on Aug. 30, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug. 31, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 1. District Councilor Jose Ray Jr. said there will be food, a beer garden, and music, including Spanish, mariachi, country/western, and rock and roll. Attendees will be charged $5 per day or $10 for the three days. Ray also mentioned that a boxing exhibition is planned, possibly between Mario Quintana and Al Gamboa, Ray said, laughing.

Council also approved two public celebration permit applications for the Outdoor Economic Conference Reception on Oct. 3 at the Big Ditch Park. Alcohol sales will be from 5-8:30 p.m.

A resolution supporting the efforts of Corre Caminos Transportation Services was approved. District 2 Councilor Lynda Aiman-Smith said that in 2018, Corre Caminos provided almost 100,000 individual rides to residents of Grant and Luna counties.

The 2021-2025 Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan was presented to council by Priscilla Arredondo, Town Planner, and Alex Brown, Town Manager. Arredondo told council that several ICIP projects were completed in fiscal year 2018, including downtown sidewalk improvement to meet ADA requirements, College Street streetlights, utilities department vehicles, wastewater plant headwater improvement, Phase 3 improvements to Silver Street, and Phase 1 improvements to Ridge Road.

 Brown described the top five projects listed in the ICIP for the 2021-2015 5-year period. They were Phase 2 of the Ridge Road project – from Pheasant Drive to city limits, Little Walnut Road – a joint project with Grant County, Scott Park improvements, town sidewalks, and begin to plan and design an expansion to Gough Park and possibly moving city hall to the Washington federal building. Council approved the ICIP.

Council also approved an ICIP for the Silver City Senior Center involving some stucco work, roofing, and interior painting for an estimated $125,000.

Aiman-Smith sponsored a notice of intent ordinance which would add a new section entitled “Small Cell Wireless Communication Facilities.” According to Aiman-Smith and Attorney James Reynolds, this would return some power to the town to control what facilities a wireless company may do within the town with respect to their equipment and infrastructure. “It would provide for an orderly process,” Reynolds told the Beat.
