Silver City Animal Control and Grant County Animal Control are requesting assistance from the general public. Over the past six weeks there has been a growing number reports from people observing drivers dumping animals at Penny Park, Old Mill Rd and in Fierro Canyon.

The dumping of animals is considered by our local ordinances to be abandonment and is against the law. Please bring your unwanted pet to the High Desert Humane Society. There is no charge but we do ask for donations.

Animals dumped in public places such as city parks are frightened and usually begin running, they are very likely to be hit by cars as they search for a safe place to hide. Animals abandoned in remote areas have no access to water or food, they fall prey to wild animals and are often hit by cars as they tend to stay along the road on which they were dumped waiting for their owner to return.

Animal Control Officers are asking anyone observing an animal being dumped, please, not to engage the pet owners. You can call city animal control at 575-388-8840 or county animal control at 575-538-9261 to file a report. Photos or video would be greatly appreciated and can be emailed to hdhs@gilanet.com where they will be forwarded to the appropriate Animal Control Officer.
