Grant County Commission held work session 060623, part 3

[Editor’s Note: This article is the third of a series of articles on the Grant County Commission work session on June 6, 2023 and the regular meeting on June 8, 2023. This one completes county director reports at the work session.]

The next county director reports at the Grant County Commission work session on June 6, 2023 came from Road Superintendent Joe Grijalva.

“Our blademen are doing routine maintenance now that we just finished patching,” Grijalva said. “Now that Southwest Concrete and Paving got the chips, we will begin our chip sealing operations. We are currently hauling chips for projects. We are working with the town of Silver City to help us with putting up the warning lights on Airport Road and the Tyrone townsite. We didn’t want to accidentally get into the fiber optics on Airport Road. I talked to Robert Esqueda and he has helped us avoid the fiber optic. We need to finish Little Walnut chip seal in late June, and another ship sealing in July and in Silver City in August.”

District 3 Commissioner Alicia Edwards asked about lights in Arenas Valley.

Fiesta Latina 061723

The annual Fiesta Latina event at Western New Mexico University began on June 15 and continued through June 18, 2023. It featured musicians and the always popular Mercado with artisans from all over Mexico, offering everything from clothing to jewelry to decorative and utilitarian objects, metals from copper to silver, handmade paper, and detailed craftsmanship in items made from straw, called popotillo to "paintings" made with feathers, and artwork from paintings to sculptures. The vast variety always draws lots of admirers and buyers.

Bear released from dumpster

On Sunday, June 18, 2023, at about 4:14 p.m., Grant County Sheriff’s Office deputies were

dispatched to 5212 Little Walnut Road in reference to a bear in a dumpster that couldn’t get out. When deputies arrived at the dumpster, the local New Mexico Game and Fish office was called and Don Jacquez responded.

Jacquez and Derrick Theobold, also of NMG&F, told the Beat that a small, adult, male, dark-colored bear weighing perhaps 75 pounds, had climbed into the dumpster at the edge of the forest and was unable to get out. Bruin was apparently attracted by the smell as there was no garbage in the dumpster. The NMG&F and GCSO rescuers were able to unlatch one of the dumpster’s sides to allow the bear to escape, Jacquez and Theobold said.

Revised: Grant County Sheriff's Office deputies to request better pay at Tuesday Special meeting

In a news release from the Grant County Sheriff's Office, deputies made a request:

“On June 20, 2023 at 09:00 AM there is to be an emergency session [Editor's Note: The meeting is not an emergency meeting, but a special meeting.] with the Grant County Commissioners at the County Building in the Commissioners Chambers. One of the topics of discussion is the requested wage increase for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office so that the deputies may obtain competitive wages with surrounding agencies for employee retention. [Editor's Note: A similar topic is on the agenda, but not this specific topic.] This topic was brought up on the last session on June 8, 2023 without an official decision rendered.[Editor's Note: Commissioners made no decision, because the topic was not on the agenda for decision]

This session will be open for public input, allotting five (5) minutes of speaking time per person. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is asking for local support from our citizens to ensure the agency can serve the best interests of the community as effectively as possible.”

HMS holds Jump Into Summer 061723

On a balmy, breezy day, Hidalgo Medical Services hosted its annual event for kids and their parents at Gough Park on June 17, 2023. Kids took advantage of bouncy houses, challenging balance paths and looking for hidden "treasures," along with always refreshing water slides. Parents watch their kids having fun, and talked to some of the information booths to find out about how to maintain good health in they children.

Toss No Más is an ongoing program in Silver City that focuses on community-wide cleaning up trash. It usually meets on the third Saturday of each month at the Gough Park parking lot.

The next report at the Grant County Commission work session on June 6, 2023 was presented by General Services Director Randy Villa.

Villa reported that the Grant County Airport fuel farm construction was underway. “It will not interrupt any flights.”

He said the fire situation wasn’t too busy [although at the time the Pass Fire was happening, with the Forest Service maintaining it for resource management]. “Rebekah (Wenger, airport manager) said the fire base is ahead of schedule in preparedness.”

Santa Clara man issued arrest warrant

A Grant County Sheriff's Office deputy was dispatched to a Bard Street address in Santa Clara on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at about 7:10 a.m., in reference to a criminal trespass complaint. The complainant, who is the homeowner, told the deputy, according to a GCSO offense report, that she witnessed Eddie Herrera, (36), of Santa Clara, standing on her front porch and knocking on her door. She could see him on her phone which has access to the surveillance cameras installed on her property.

The complainant stated Herrera has a CTW to her address issued by Santa Clara Police Department Chief Lonnie Sandoval and was not welcome on her property. After seeing him on her phone she did not open the door for him and immediately called the Grant County Regional Dispatch Authority to request a deputy. She said she wanted to pursue criminal charges against Herrera for violating the CTW. The deputy advised he will be filing a warrant for Herrera's arrest.
