SCFD honors outgoing assistant chief

The Silver City Fire Department arranged a ceremony Wednesday, May 31, 2023, to honor Assistant Chief and Emergency Manager Jeff Fell, on his last day of duty, for his 20 years of service to the department. Fell is retiring from SCFD and plans to move his family to Stillwater, Oklahoma, the middle of August. There he will join the non-profit International Fire Service Training Association based at Oklahoma State University. Fell will be a training specialist building relationships with other fire departments using his skills in fire prevention to train other fire departments and making sure those departments have the instructional material they need.

Fell told the Beat, although IFSTA instruction is available in multiple languages over the entire world, it's possible his area to oversee may include New Mexico.

Silver Schools had many recognitions and awards

The Silver City Consolidated Schools held a work session at the Silver High School Little Theater on May 15, 2023. President Ashley Montenegro called the meeting to order. Other board members in attendance Michelle Diaz, Patrick Cohn, Mike McMillan, and Eddie Flores. Superintendent William Hawkins also attended. The Pledge of Allegiance and salute to the New Mexico flag took place.

The board approved the agenda.

The purpose of this work session had to do with the upcoming school budget for fiscal year 2023-2024. Michelle McCain, finance director, gave a very detailed presentation.

A summary of the expected revenue came to $31,513,407. The revenue sources included SEG (state equalization guarantee), copper, local tax, and several others.

Road rage worsens into shooting

On Sunday, May 28, 2023, at about 10:22 a.m., Silver city Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of 2600 N. Swan Street in reference to a shooting complaint. A blotter entry indicated a caller advised that someone had shot her husband in the parking lot of Stout Elementary School and he was bleeding out. A second caller advised the Grant County Regional Dispatch Authority the shooting was the result of a fight between a motorcyclist and a car driver.

According to an SCPD report, when officers arrived, they found the victim, a 44-year-old male of Silver City, lying on the ground and bleeding from his mouth, chin, and head/neck area, A male, who was on his way to church and had EMS training, was on scene assisting to stanch the bleeding. As the assisting male and an officer were providing medical attention to the victim, Silver City Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and continued the medical aid.

The victim's wife told officers, the report stated, that the incident began on College Avenue, as they were travelling east toward Hudson Street, when the motorcyclist, later identified as Roland Puchi, 39, of Silver City, cut them off as he made a left turn onto College Avenue from Bullard Street. The motorcyclist and the victim met up a little later as both were stopped, headed north, at the traffic light on Hudson and 12th streets, where, she said, the two men exchanged words.

Monday May 29, 2023, many gathered to remember and honor the people lost in service to our country.

Phillip Torres, cemetery manager, was master of ceremonies. Torres served in the Army and served in Desert Storm. The Marine Corps League, American Legion and Vietnam Veterans posted the colors.

Lorraine Anglin sang the national anthem and Roger Wright of American Legion Riders led the Pledge of Allegiance. Marine Corps Detachment 1328 Chaplain Robert Lopez gave the invocation.

Grant County Sheriff's Office makes arrest after responding to a shooting in Arenas Valley

The Grant County Sheriff's Office arrested Jad Carver after responding to a shooing that occurred in Arenas Valley.

On May 28, 2023 at approximately 0846 hours, Deputies were dispatched to the area of 11843 Highway 180 east in regards to a shooting.

Carver was shooting at Michael Gomez as he was leaving his residence in his vehicle. Michael was taking the frontage road off of Monte Street traveling eastbound as another vehicle then drove in front of Michael's facing westbound blocking the road. Michael was able to reverse back onto Monte St. and drove back onto Highway 180. Michael alleges Carver pulled a gun out and opened fire on him in the median hitting Michael and his vehicle. Michael sustained non-life threatening injuries to his neck and right hand.

Pass Fire continues to help achieve forest health

Firefighters continue to actively monitor the fire and are strategically initiating burnout operations as needed to protect Double Springs Ranch and allotment fences. As the Pass Fire continues its trek across the landscape, firefighters assess specific areas that require pre-treatment to modify the fire’s intensity as it reaches identified values-at-risk. Fuels, terrain and weather dictate the fire’s spread. Crews are keeping pace with the fire and ensuring that pre-determined objectives are met. Features like roads and trails can act as barriers to fire spread. “The fire effects are being constantly monitored and the Pass Fire is burning naturally in this fire-dependent ecosystem. We appreciate the support of the local communities who are closely monitoring the Pass Fire, as well,” said Pete Valenzuela, Incident Commander.

Weather: High temperatures will be near normal, 80’s to 90’s; winds are expected to increase ahead of a low front which could result in critical fire weather on Wednesday afternoon. Winds are expected to taper off on Thursday. Potential chance for rainshowers arriving this weekend.

Closures: There are no road closures at this time, however firing operations will be intermittently occurring over the next few days along Highway 59 as the fire continues to spread under current fuel and weather conditions.
