Silver City, NM - Silver City, NM - The Western New Mexico University Foundation in association with the Foy family announced the establishment of the Thomas P. Foy Endowed Scholarship to be awarded annually to a veteran or child of a veteran.

Representative Foy served in the New Mexico House of Representatives representing Grant and Hidalgo counties for 14 terms. The importance of education and working for his fellow veterans were two main principles of Representative Foy's lifephilosophy.

“Get a good education, work hard, have a good moral compass to guide you, and serve your fellow man. Accept responsibility for the good that you do as well as the mistakes that you make. Enjoy Life.” These are the words Representative Foy lived by.

Prior to elected office, Representative Foy led an accomplished military career. He survived the Bataan Death March and was a prisoner of war until 1945. He received the decorated Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Asian Pacific Ribbon, and the New Mexico Distinguished Service Medal. Foy was always active in veterans' matters and was a member of numerous veterans' groups. He never forgot his fellow veterans and worked tirelessly on their behalf.

The family decided that setting up a scholarship for veterans or their children would recognize Representative Foy's focus on education and continue his work with fellow veterans.

“We are honored at the thoughtfulness and trust the Foy family has placed in WNMU to provide educational opportunities through this scholarship. This endowment furthers Representative Foy's belief in advancing our society through education,” said WNMU President Joseph Shepard. The endowed scholarship will continue Foy's legacy of placing importance in education and honoring the veterans who have served our nation selflessly.

The family and the university wish to thank all the donors for the donations received to date and request that all future donations to this scholarship be directed to: Western New Mexico UniversityFoundation, P.O. Box 1158, Silver City, NM 88062.
