Quemado, NM, November 21, 2017. The Gila National Forest, Quemado Ranger District will implemented closures effective November 30 at 12:00 noon for the El Caso Campgrounds. This closure is the standard seasonal closure.
Safety tips for traveling in the Gila National Forest so that you "Know before You Go":
- Check with NM Roads for up-to-date road conditions. http://nmroads.com/mapIndex_2017041401.html?
- Check in with the USGS National Water Information System which will indicate water flows for the Gila River and Mimbres River Basin. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/NM/nwis/current?type=flow&group_key=county_cd&search_site_no_station_nm
- Remember that the Gila NF covers over 3 million acres and many small communities. Look at the predicted weather for the specific area where you plan to visit. http://www.weather.gov/
- DO NOT cross flooded roadways or flooded washes.
Reminder: There are many alternatives available for dispersed camping on the Gila NF and if you would like a more developed camping experience, there is still the Valle Tio Vinces and Armijo Springs Campgrounds on Quemado Ranger District and the Upper End Campground at Lake Roberts.
