ella jaz rsA new music CD, Ella Jaz-Fly Free, will be released at a concert on Saturday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the El Sol Theater on Bullard Street in downtown Silver City. Ella Jaz Kirk, 14, was a musician and environmental activist, who died in 2014 in an aircraft accident near Whiskey Creek Airport in Grant County. Ella Jaz performed on her fiddle with the local group, Bayou Seco and composed many songs on piano and voice. One of the first songs she recorded at age 8, The Hand, went on to win the state-wide "Hey Mozart" Child Composer competition.

To preserve and share Ella's music, a who's who of area musicians recorded her songs, produced a CD including a booklet of all of Ella's lyrics, and will perform those songs live to celebrate the release of the CD. Thirteen original songs by Kirk are included on the CD as well as four originals by Melanie Zipin, Andrew Dahl-Bredine, and Madeline Alfero. Each will be performing at the El Sol, along with others recorded on the CD, including Bayou Seco, Maria Casler, Peter Dahl- Bredine, and Amos Torres. Nine year-old musicians Kai Casler and Grace Dahl-Bredine will also sing some of Ella's early composition.

In addition to the Saturday evening performance, a Sunday matinee concert begins at 3 p.m. on April 22. For both shows, doors open 45 minutes early for light refreshments and CD sales of all participating musicians. Early arrivals are encouraged to come and enjoy local music. Tickets are available in advance at O'Keefe's Bookstore, Bear Creek Herbs and Leyba and Ingalls Arts and are $12 for adults including a free Fly Free CD. Student prices are available and children under 12 are free with a ticket.

As an all ages event, the entire community is encouraged to attend this eclectic and unique musical event. Says musician, Andrew Dahl-Bredine, "I'm honored to be involved in this project that carries on the memory of Ella Jaz, as well as the legacy she left in poetry, music, and thought. The gifts she left for us, at such a young age, continue to enrich us and challenge us to live the best lives we can."
