Truth or Consequences, NM, May 25, 2018—The Indian Peaks Prescribed Burn, on the Black Range Ranger District, began ignitions on the evening of Saturday, May 19, and ended ignitions on Wednesday, May 23. In those four days, approximately 11,000 acres were burned.

All personnel on the fire have converted to holding operations – which include monitoring the burnt areas and ensuring the fire remains within the planned boundaries. The three units were a combination of first entry prescribed fire to third entry prescribed fire. The varied terrain and vegetation types created a mosaic fire footprint on the landscape and will provide many opportunities in the future for learning more about how these vegetation types rebound post fire. The burn had approximately 100 firefighters, including firefighters from New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. As of Thursday, May 24 the prescribed fire started releasing firefighters to return to their home stations. The prescribed fire will be monitored by several firefighters over the next week.
