migrants and asylum rsWith all of the news coming from our Southern Border; waves of people attempting to enter the United States, children being separated from their parents, deportations of migrants without being given the "due process" guaranteed by our Constitution; a local group has decided there is a need for our community to be given factual information. There will be an open forum held at the Bayard Community Center, at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, August 23.

The Immigrant Justice Network, a local interdenominational organization devoted to the just treatment of immigrants and the Grant County Democratic Party is sponsoring a public forum on this subject. "MIGRANTS & ASYLUM: Who Are They, Where Are They Coming From, Why Are They Coming Here, What is Asylum" is the topic for discussion. The featured speaker will be Imelda Maynard, the Immigration Attorney for Catholic Social Services, in Las Cruces. She and that organization have been leaders in the defense of men, women, and children who have been escaping threats and violence to find safety in the United States. Other knowledgeable sources of information have been invited but have not yet confirmed.

As with all other forums in which the Grant County Democratic Party has been involved, we are inviting everyone to share in a communal meal after, during which discussions can be continued. Please plan to attend, and bring your questions and comments in order that we can all become better informed.
