Phillip ConnorsOn September 8, Glenwood Community Library is featuring a book signing by Philip Connors, author of the popular "Fire Season," based on his experiences as a fire lookout in New Mexico's Gila National Forest. His new book, "A Song for the River" is a sequel about calamity and resilience in the world's first Wilderness. A dozen years into his dream job keeping watch over the Gila National Forest, Philip Connors bore witness to the blaze he had always feared: a megafire that forced him off his mountain by helicopter, and forever changed the forest and watershed he loved.

Connors studied print journalism at the University of Montana and worked at the Wall Street Journal

"Fire Season: Field Notes From a Wilderness Lookout" was named the best nature book of the year in 2011 by Amazon. It won the National Outdoor Book Award, the Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award, and the Reading the West Award for nonfiction. His essays have appeared in Harper's, the London Review of Books, the New York Times Magazine, the Paris Review, and the Nation.

Calling all Bingo lovers
Glenwood Senior Center's upcoming fundraiser is a Harvest Bingo and 50/50 Cash Raffle Saturday Sept. 15. Doors open at noon for lunch at the Center on Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood. Games start at 12:30 p.m. There will be a $100 Blackout game and door prizes.

Movie Night at Glenwood Community Library will be held on Friday Sept 21 this month. The film for this month is "Won't You Be My Neighbor," a documentary about Fred Rogers and his legacy. Showtime is 7 p.m. at the library, 14 Menges Lane, Glenwood, New Mexico 88039.

Every Saturday
The Glenwood Street Market, featuring arts and crafts, and food, is growing. New vendors are adding even more variety to the selections. The latest addition is home-made ice cream. It is open from about 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood. The Market will also be open on Labor Day, Monday Sept. 3.

Mogollon is back in business after a year-long road closure due to a major construction project. The museum, the Old Kelly Store which features all sorts of hand-crafted items and art and the popular eatery, the Purple Onion, are now open. Check out this unique ghost town.

Coming up in October
Glenwood is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Glenwood Fish Hatchery. Join the festivities on Saturday, Oct, 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. This fall fishing and outdoor education event will include a history of the hatchery as well as activities on OHV safety, pellet air rifle trailer, spin casting and fishing skills, skulls & skins, and much more. This free family event has something for kids of all ages. There will be lunch and door prizes.
