Silver City, NM, September 6, 2018—The Gila National Forest would like to remind hunters and recreational visitors of potential hazards in the woods. Increased situational awareness is especially important when traveling within the Buzzard and Owl Fire burned areas. Remember to look up, look down, and look all around. Snags and dead trees, flash floods, and unstable soils are just a few hazards to be aware of.

Although monsoon season will soon be winding down, visitors should continue to exercise caution and alertness in these areas as rainstorms continue to occur and the risk for flooding exists. The Gila National Forest reminds you not to camp in flood plains as creeks rise quickly and could wash out your camp. Visitors are encouraged to contact the local ranger district for current status of campgrounds and roads before heading out to the woods.
