The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) essay contest has been conducted annually by ALA for more than 60 years for children, nationwide, in grades 3-12.  Each year there is a new topic, or theme, in the form of a question.  Participating students should seek to answer the question in their essay and must stay within the minimum and maximum word count corresponding to their grade level.  The deadline for entries at the Grant County level is Wednesday, March 20.  Essays may be hand delivered to the American Legion Hall on College Avenue on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. or call 575-64-4884 for pickup.

Essays will be judged at the American Legion Post 18 in Silver City.  The best entry in each of the VI age groups will be awarded a certificate and a check for $50 by ALA Unit 18.  The essays are then sent on to Department (State) and then the Western Division levels.  Winners at the Western Division level will receive an additional certificate and check for $50.  ALA ladies enjoy rewarding children when they learn about Americanism and hope they receive dozens of entries.  Call (575) 654-4884, if you have any questions.
