A special encore showing of  ”Undeterred”, a documentary film which shows how the people of Arivaca, Arizona, have mobilized to provide life-sustaining humanitarian assistance to migrants struggling to cross the desert on foot; and how they are asking respect for their own constitutional rights as U.S. citizens. The film will be shown at 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2019, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall, 3845 N. Swan Street in Silver City.

An unincorporated rural community of just 700 residents located 11 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border and 35 miles northwest of Nogales, Arivacans moved from shocked disbelief to resolute community resistance as Border Patrol abuses became increasingly harsh at the checkpoints on all three roads to the town.

A spokesperson said, “Arivaca, Arizona, has been a community since long before current border policing occurred. Today, Arivacans are trapped in their community, subjected to interrogations and inspections by armed Border Patrol officers at checkpoints whenever they leave town or return. ”Undeterred” shows, through their own stories and actions, how militarization of the border affects their personal lives and their privacy. Homeland Security has destroyed security for Arivacans - and they are resisting!”

“Our own community is little more than an hour’s drive from the U.S.-Mexico border, with Border Patrol checkpoints and aerial surveillance equipment encountered by any of us who visit Mexico,” a spokesperson said. “Our friends and neighbors may not feel comfortable talking about their fears, but many feel at risk of detention by ICE officers, break-ups of families, and even expedited deportation. This film is directly relevant to us, right here!”

A suggested donation of $10 per adult will be requested at the door to support the work of the UUFSC Social Justice Committee; however, no one will be turned away. All donations go to support organizations, which support the many of goals of the UUFSC: Immigrant Justice, Climate Change/Global Warming Awareness, and Income Justice.
