college ave v1Local infrastructure improvements scheduled to begin this year include Ridge Road, and streets in the Chihuahua Hill neighborhood. Peter Peña, director of the Silver City Public Works Department, said recently completed College Avenue improvements set a new standard for local streets. "College Avenue turned out really well," says Peña. "Not only does it look nice, but it functions well, creating a safe street for all types of users - people who live there, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists." College Avenue improvements were made possible through a collaboration between the Town of Silver City and Western New Mexico University.Ridge Road, Chihuahua Hill and Downtown Sidewalk Repairs Scheduled

Silver City -- Warming weather heralds the annual roll-out of the orange barrels, marking the start of a
number of local infrastructure improvement projects in Silver City, this year to include new paving and
improved drainage on Ridge Road and in the Chihuahua Hill neighborhood, as well as new downtown
sidewalks. New sidewalks with improved ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) access will be constructed on the following blocks in the historic downtown area:

 Market and Yankie streets from Bullard to Pinos Altos; and
 Texas , Pinos Altos and Arizona streets from Market to Yankie.

This $405K project is entirely funded by the State of New Mexico, and is slated to begin in the fall, with
completion expected in early 2020.
The largest road improvement project begins late this year on Ridge Road from Highway 90 to just south of
Pheasant Road. Phase I Improvements include new pavement, curbs and gutters, ADA-improved sidewalks on the east side of the road, as well as new signage and driveway entrances, drainage improvements, and striping to include bike lanes. This $900,000 project is funded through the New Mexico Colonias Infrastructure Project Fund, established to address inadequate infrastructure in communities recognized as colonias. As funding allows, Ridge Road improvements will extend from Highway 90 to the city limits.

A second road project will begin in July in the Chihuahua Hill neighborhood, and includes new pavement,
curbing and gutters, as well as ADA-sidewalk improvements, a retaining wall on the east and north sides of the park at the intersection of Richard and Theodore streets, driveway entrances and signage. The specific blocks included in this $748,000 project are:

 Dorothy Street from Robert Street to Theodore;
 Daniel Street from Robert Street to NM Highway 90;
 Richard Street from Robert to the dead end; and
 Theodore Street from Dorothy Street to Alice.

The Town Council will consider awarding the construction bid at the May 28 council meeting, and the
project is expected to be completed in October.

Finally, the annual "chip and fog seal" improvements are scheduled to begin in August on the following
streets:

 Andrea Way from Sara to Serinna Court;
 Brianna Way from Sara to Serinna Court;
 Kimberly Street from Serinna Court to Pine Street;
 Leslie Road from 32nd Street to Sara Court;
 North Loop; (from Leslie Street to Leslie Street)
 Ridgecrest from the Dead End to the cul de sac;
 Ridge Loop from the Dead End to 32nd ;
 Sara Court from the cul de sac to Brianna Way;
 Serrina Court from Andrea Way to the dead end;
 32nd Street from Swan to Pinos Altos Road; and
 32nd Street Bypass Road from Pinos Altos Road to US Highway 180.

"Chip and fog sealing "refers to the process of laying down a liquid paving emulsion mixed with aggregate,
followed some 30 days later with a bonding agent which seals the emulsion. Each year the section of
roadway to be repaired is selected according to the town's pavement management plan, as well as
observations by street division personnel. This $150K project is funded by the Town of Silver City and the
New Mexico Department of Transportation.
