The National Weather Service will be presenting two SKYWARN Spotter classes sponsored by the Western New Mexico University Outdoor Program. Both classes will be held in the 3rd floor Seminar Room of the Student Memorial Building on the WNMU campus. The building can be accessed from the 1st floor entrance off College Avenue. 

Monday, July 8, 2019 – Basic SKYWARN Spotter, 6:00 to 9:00 PM. (Prerequisite: None) 

Monday, July 15, 2019 – Advanced SKYWARN Spotter, 6:00 to 8:30 PM (Prerequisite: Basic SKYWARN Spotter) 

SKYWARN Spotters are part of the ranks of citizens who form the Nation’s first line of defense against severe weather, especially here in Grant County.NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service and access to communication, such Ham radio, to join the SKYWARN program. Volunteers include police, fire, and search and rescue personnel, dispatchers, EMTs, public utility workers, and other concerned private citizens.  Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches, nursing homes, or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encouraged to become a Spotter. 

Both classes are free and open to the public. No registration is required. Current SKYWARN Spotters are welcomed to take the classes as a refresher.
