mata ortiz potSILVER CITY: Silver City Museum announces pottery techniques by Master artist Oralia Lopez from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua for ClayFest to take place Saturday, July 20 from 10:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Dr. John Bezy will give a presentation about the prehistoric roots of modern Mata Ortiz at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Children and families will make and decorate Mimbres-style vessels from 1:30-3:30.

oralia high resolution photoMaster artist Oralia Lόpez from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, will be at the Silver City Museum in the Education Room located at 312 Broadway on Saturday, July 20, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. She will be demonstrating the intricate technique used to paint pottery including elegant forms, precision designs and beautiful colors. Oralia will have a wonderful selection of work by many other fine Mata Ortiz artists for purchase at reasonable prices starting at $20. 

At 11:00 am, and 1:00 pm, Dr. John Bezy, author of numerous publications about the human and natural history of the Southwest and northern Mexico, will be making a presentation about the prehistoric roots of modern Mata Ortiz ceramics in the museum parlor. 

From 1:30 to 3:30, youth are invited to make their own one-of-a-kind Mimbres-style clay plate as souvenir. Guided by staff, children and their families will roll, shape and decorate a clay vessel like the ancient pot currently on display in the Besse Forward Gallery. Participants will learn about the pottery history, techniques and designs used by the prehistoric inhabitants of southwest New Mexico.
