Title: “The Incredible Wildlife of Antarctica”
Description: The trip of a lifetime took Debb and Bud Johnson to the southern tip of Chile where they boarded a plane and flew over the Drake Passage to King George Island. For the next 16 days they lived on the Russian Research Vessel Vavilov and cruised around the Antarctic peninsula, the “Banana Belt” of the continent, amid icebergs, sea birds, whales, seals and penguins. They will introduce the audience to the magnificence of the frozen continent, the sea mammals that thrive in the cold waters of the southern seas and the sea birds that only come to land to raise their young. And they will take you with them as they cross the Scotia Sea to South Georgia, ending in the Falklands before flying back to Chile.

Biographies: Debb and Bud moved to Portal Arizona in 2013 after years of visiting the Chiricahuas for camping, hiking and birding. They are self-taught naturalists and strive to co-exist with their wild bird, reptile and mammal neighbors.

Title: “What’s in a name? Service, Therapy, Emotional Support, Comfort”
Description: Dogs, as pets, may provide emotional support and comfort, but they can also be used for service and therapy. What does that mean in terms of their training, registration/certification and their right of access to public areas under the Americans With Disabilities Act? What can a dog owner be asked, legally, with respect to their dog, and how much do they need to answer? Under what circumstances can a dog be refused admission to a place of business, public transportation and/or housing? With this presentation we will clear up some of the misperceptions concerning the law and what constitute abuses of the law. This presentation is for the general public, business owners/managers, and those considering having a dog that is more than a pet.

Biography: Darlene Colmar has worked with dogs for over 50 years. She was a 4-time puppy raiser for Leader Dogs for the Blind, tests for the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and has been teaching classes for puppy and adult dogs since 2008.

Title: “Listful Thinking”
Description: We shall discuss the use and the significance of lists in public (e.g., religion, law) and in our personal lives (e.g., shopping, bucket). Health care and aviation are examples of areas where lists are put into action as ‘checklists.’ The recent surge in digitalized ‘listicles’ on the Web will be noted, e.g., “25 Pairs of Shoes You Won’t Believe Are From WalMart.” We shall emphasize that lists have inherent limitations:
1) The number of items on a list is usually arbitrary,
2) Not all the items on a list have the same weight or relevance,
3) Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year.
Presenter: Bill Baldwin
Biography: Bill and Caroline Baldwin moved to Silver City from Massachusetts more than two decades ago. Bill graduated from Harvard College, majoring in linguistics and near eastern languages, and pursued an international business career in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Later Bill earned a Master’s Degree in library and information science at Simmons College in Boston.
