The Silver City/Southwest New Mexico Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) invites members, potential members, and other interested individuals to our kick-off meeting on Sunday, Sept. 22, at The Conservatory of Dance Studio, 2020 Cottage San Rd. from 1:30 – 3:30. Join us in celebrating our Branch’s 81st year of being an active advocate for women’s and girls’ issues, and learn more about who we are and what we do in the community. Our calendar of events, projects and programs for the year will be presented, and light refreshments and entertainment will be provided.

One of the organization’s key projects since 1993 is the annual EYH (Expanding Your Horizons) conference held on the WNMU campus to encourage 5th – 8th grade girls to pursue STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics) careers. Each year, hundreds of girls from southwest NM participate in the day-long conference. At our kick-off meeting you’ll have the opportunity to sign-up to help organize and participate in the next EYH conference on Feb 22, 2020.

Other Branch activities include interviewing local 7th grade students who have been recommended by their teachers to apply for a “Tech Trek” one-week summer science camp at NM Tech in Socorro. This June two students from Aldo Leopold Charter School and one from La Plata Middle School were selected to attend this camp, with all expenses paid by AAUW.

In addition, at our Holiday celebration each December we raise money for our Barbara Brown Scholarship for a returning woman WNMU student, and we plan to continue to raise money for our EYH conference by participating in the community “Give Grandly” non-profit fundraising event as well as the Co-op’s Roundup program in December.
