32nd streetv1Silver City -- Road improvements on 32nd Street from Swan Street east to Pinos Altos Road begin Monday, June 5, when the two westbound lanes from Silver Street to Fowler will be closed for construction. The $3.5 million project includes new paving, construction of new curb and gutter where needed, replacement and construction of sidewalks, drive-pads, ADA-approved intersections for the physically challenged, drainage improvements at the low water crossing near the high school, signage and striping to include bike lanes. The contractor is Southwest Concrete and Paving Co. of Silver City.

Peter Peña, director of Public Works for the Town of Silver City, said the project will take approximately four months to complete, and lane closures will change as construction progresses, but some lanes will always be open to through traffic. In addition, a new bus shelter will be built on the south side of the street, across from Silver High School. It will be located between the building at the corner and the new recreation center.

Police Chief Freddie Portillo urged motorists to allow additional travel time and to be extra cautious during construction. "Let's all please slow down, pay attention and keep a safe distance from other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, not only in this construction area, but on every street," he said. "We all want to enjoy these beautiful summer months without traffic crashes or other accidents."
