The Quakers of Gila Friends Meeting invite members of the community to join them at the First Church of Harmony, 609 Arizona Street in Silver City to celebrate World Quaker Day from 10:00 a.m. to noon this Sunday, October 1. A video about “Ubuntu” will be shared, with silent worship and worship sharing to follow. Light refreshments and social time will follow the rise of meeting. (Masks are optional.)

“Ubuntu” is a Bantu word widely used in Southern Africa. It is sometimes translated as “I am because you are,” or “we are because you are.” It is not just a word; it is a way of living. It resonates strongly with Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community and equality and the Biblical I Corinthians 12:12-27 emphasis on loving God and Spirit, cherishing Creation and treating others as we would wish to be treated.
