Measure Calls For CYFD to Improve Care of Foster Children
Santa Fe – House Republicans are cheering the passage of House Joint Memorial 10 (HJM 10) which calls on the Children, Youth and Families Department to convene a task force to better protect foster children throughout the state. HJM 10 is sponsored by Representatives Rebecca Dow (R-Truth or Consequences,) Kelly Fajardo (R-Los Lunas,) and Gail Armstrong (R-Magdalena) and it outlines requirements for the task force to address in order provide better care for approximately 2,500 in New Mexico.
“These are our most vulnerable children living through a chaotic time in their life and we need to be doing more for them,” said Rep. Fajardo. “There is no reason the foster care system in New Mexico can’t provide the best care and we won’t except any excuses.”
“Children in foster care and the loving families who take them in deserve so much more support than they are currently receiving,” said Rep. Dow. “We finally need to have an honest conversation about where we need to do more for the foster care system, there is too much at stake.”
“Protecting our children isn’t a political issue, we need to be doing more,” said Rep. Gail Armstrong. “This measure is a big step in being honest about what needs to change in order to better protect our children.”
