Santa Fe, NM – Today, a memorial to study the opportunity for job growth at the Escalante Generating Station in Prewitt, New Mexico passed the House Floor. House Memorial 41, introduced by Reps. Harry Garcia (D-Grants) and Eliseo Alcon (D-Milan), would provide a report relating to the potential for job growth in the Prewitt area.
“There have been changes in the local economy in the area that have contributed to job loss, so we want to make sure we’re doing everything we can for the hardworking people in my district to get back on their feet. In order to grow the economy, we must explore all potential opportunities,” said Rep. Harry Garcia.
“The northwest New Mexico region has a long history of energy production that continues to evolve, so the potential for job growth in this area is exciting. We’re confident that getting this study off the ground will enable the community to have more prospects,” said Rep. Eliseo Alcon.
The Escalante Generating Station is located in Prewitt, twenty-seven miles northwest of Grants in the heart of the uranium mining area about 105 miles west of Albuquerque. The bill is also sponsored by Reps. Patricia A. Lundstrom (D-Gallup) and D. Wonda Johnson (D-Church Rock). The memorial requests that the Workforce Solutions Department and the Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department conduct this study and present their findings to the relevant interim committees by November 1.
