SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico State Forestry Division (NMSF) will be selling seedlings every day at this year's State Fair inside the Bob Gerding Natural Resources Building at Expo New Mexico from September 7 through September 17, 2017. Each seedling is $2.

"With fall just a few weeks away, it's the perfect time to plant young trees," according to New Mexico State Forestry Conservation Seedling Program Manager Carol Bada. "Cooler Autumn weather allows seedling roots to become established before going dormant for winter and gives them a head start on growth for spring," said Bada.

At www.nmforestry, conservations seedlings are also available in bulk to property owners with at least one acre of land in New Mexico to use as erosion control, wildlife habitat, reforestation, riparian restoration, windbreak establishment, Christmas tree plantations, or other conservation needs.

More than 50 species of native trees and shrubs are available, including Ponderosa Pine, Blue Spruce, Rio Grande Cottonwood, Smooth Sumac, Mountain Mahogany and Chokecherry. Some species may sell out early and sales are first-come, first-serve.

Small container seedlings of one-year-old plants are sold in minimum lots of 49 of the same species for $80. The Conservation Seedling Program also now offers multi-species bundles specific to ecosystems. These bundles are available in one-season growth containers at $80 for 49 trees and/or shrubs. There is a $5 handling fee per order.

"Your seedling delivery or pick up date should be scheduled so trees and shrubs are planted five weeks before the first hard freeze in your area", said Bada.

The final day to order online will be October 6, 2017. Distribution will begin September 12, 2017. The last day to pick up seedlings at the Santa Fe distribution center will be October 13, 2017.

Secure online ordering is available at www.nmforestry.com. Payment with a Visa, Master Card or Discover Card is accepted. Checks are accepted with mail-in order forms available on the NMSF website. Individuals who wish to have an application form mailed to them should contact Conservation Seedling Program Manager Carol Bada at (505) 476-3334. Seedlings are delivered by UPS, or may be picked up at the distribution center in Santa Fe, 3250 Calle Princessa Juana, 87507. All proceeds are re-invested back into the NMSF Conservation Seedling Program.
