SANTA FE – La Oficina de Agua Potable (DWB por su sigla en inglés) del Departamento del Medio Ambiente de Nuevo México (NMED por su sigla en inglés) confirma que se exige una "advertencia de la necesidad de hervir el agua" para Cochiti Elementary School del condado de Sandoval County.

Se le ordenó a Cochiti Elementary School emitir la advertencia el 12 de enero de 2018 luego de detectarse una contaminación bacteriológica (E. coli) en muestras repetidas de agua potable del sistema de distribución de agua. El Reglamento de Nuevo México para el Agua Potable exige que Cochiti Elementary School notifique a sus consumidores del sistema de agua sobre estas determinaciones tan pronto como sea posible, pero no más de 24 horas después del momento en que el Sistema es notificado de la confirmación de la transgresión.

Cochiti Elementary School es un sistema público de distribución de agua o no transitorio, no comunitario que abastece aproximadamente a 260 usuarios. Esta recomendación se aplica al agua potable de Cochiti Elementary School y no se extiende a ningún otro sistema circundante de distribución de agua.

Se recomienda que los usuarios de Cochiti Elementary School hiervan el agua durante un minuto (3 minutos si se encuentran a más de 6,500 pies de altitud) antes de usarla para beber, cocinar, lavar frutas y verduras, alimentar a un bebé, cepillarse los dientes, preparar bebidas, fabricar hielo y antes de dársela a las mascotas para beber.

La presencia de E. coli en el agua indica que el agua podría haber estado en contacto con aguas residuales o desechos de animales y que podría contener organismos causantes de enfermedades. La mayoría de las cepas de E. coli son inofensivas y viven en los intestinos de los seres humanos y de los animales sanos. Sin embargo, un análisis positivo de E. coli en el sistema de distribución de agua potable podría indicar la presencia de cepas peligrosas de E. coli o de otros organismos causantes de enfermedades. Estos tipos de organismos pueden causar enfermedades gastrointestinales graves y, en raras ocasiones, la muerte. Los niños, las personas mayores y los individuos inmunocomprometidos tienen un mayor riesgo de enfermedad.

La Oficina de Agua Potable del NMED brindará supervisión de cumplimiento, ofrecerá asistencia técnica para el sistema de agua y exigirá que Cochiti Elementary School continúe analizando el agua hasta que ya no exista ninguna amenaza de contaminación.
