Santa Fe, NM – Today, New Mexico House Democrats hosted American Indian Day to celebrate New Mexico's Pueblos, Tribes, and Nations' contributions to the state and the country. American Indian Day celebration began with cultural festivities in the Rotunda, then moved to a joint session where New Mexico's Tribes and Pueblos were recognized on the House Floor, and concluded with a special ceremony honoring the service of retiring Democratic Representative Nick Salazar.

"It has been an honor to serve in the New Mexico legislature and serve the people of New Mexico for nearly 46 years. Being recognized on the House Floor is something that I will always cherish," said Rep. Nick Salazar (D-Ohkay Owingeh).

Representative Nick Salazar was first elected to Represent New Mexico House District 40 in 1972, making him the longest serving member of the New Mexico Legislature. In his tenure, he has championed Native American issues, health care access, education, and senior services. During the ceremony on the House Floor today, representatives from the Pueblos of Tesuque and Ohkay Owingeh along with Reps. Wonda Johnson (D-Church Rock) and Derrick Lente (D-Sandia Pueblo) presented him with a blanket, and the Pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh sang an honor song.

American Indian Day was established as a formal day for communication and collaboration between the New Mexico Legislature and New Mexico Tribes, Nations, and Pueblo Leaders.
