Albuquerque – The National History Day – New Mexico State Competition will take place in Albuquerque on April 27, 2018.

Over two-hundred and forty students from twenty schools from across the state will compete in eighteen different categories to determine who will represent New Mexico at the 2018 National History Day Contest. First and second place winners will advance to the National Contest, which is held on campus of the University of Maryland in College Park in June. The 2018 New Mexico State Competition includes students from Alamogordo, Albuquerque, Farmington, Lordsburg, Los Alamos, Las Cruces, Moriarty, Rio Rancho, Silver City, and other communities.

National History Day is a year-round program that encourages thousands of middle and high school students nationwide to engage in research on a topic of their choosing that relates to the yearly theme. Each year, students develop projects on topics of their choice, in different media, around a central theme identified for the national contest. This year the theme "Conflict and Compromise" has inspired New Mexican students to develop projects on subjects from Benazir Bhutto to assisted suicide, and covering topics from ancient Persia to late 20th century America.

At the contest, students connect with professionals in their field. Historians, educators, performers, museum personnel, and scholars from across the state volunteer to judge, discuss each project with the students, and offer constructive feedback from a professional perspective. Others sponsor cash awards on topics such as women's history, Native American History, civil rights, or military history. Interested sponsors or judges are encouraged to contact the NMHC to make arrangements.

The contest is open to the public at no charge. Student created documentaries and performances will be running simultaneously, starting at about 9:00 a.m. The exhibit hall will be open to the public from noon – 1:00 p.m. Schedules will be posted in the registration area of the Pete V. Domenici Education Building on the NHCC campus.

At 1:30 p.m., musicians Jane Voss and Hoyle Osborne will perform in the Journal Theater. Voss and Osborne will perform All In, Down and Out: The Great Depression in Song and Story, an historical concert-lecture that includes American folk and popular music.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Rob Martinez, New Mexico State Historian, will begin at about 2:30 p.m. in the Journal Theatre.

The New Mexico State Competition is sponsored by the New Mexico Humanities Council and is hosted by the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
