MVD encourages organ donation during Donate Life Month

Albuquerque, N.M. – Today the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) joined New Mexico Donor Services to encourage New Mexicans to become Organ Donors and to celebrate the MVD's achievements in signing up New Mexicans as Organ Donors. In 2017, the MVD signed up 46,721 new organ donors.

"At any given time, over 750 New Mexicans are awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant that may never come and I encourage all New Mexicans to become registered organ donors to make a difference for those in need," said John Monforte, Acting Cabinet Secretary for the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. "I would like to thank our MVD staff and partners at New Mexico Donor Services for all they do to create a positive impact in the lives of New Mexicans."

Throughout the month of April, MVD offices around the state will display posters encouraging people to register as organ donors. MVD clerks will also talk to customers about their choice to become a registered organ donor.
"Registering to become an organ donor is easier than ever," said Alicia Ortiz, Acting Director of the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. "When you come into an MVD office to get your driver's license, a clerk will talk to you about your option to register as an organ donor and you will see the option on your application form – all you have to do is check a box."

Since 1978, the Motor Vehicle Division has supported an individual's decision to save lives by asking customers if they would like to register to be an organ and tissue donor on the driver's license or identification card.

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division of the Taxation and Revenue Department is responsible for administering driver's licenses and vehicle registrations in New Mexico. With over 350 employees, MVD handles more than 1.8 million transactions each year. MVD operates 33 field offices and partners with municipalities and private vendors across the state to administer services to New Mexicans.
