New Mexico State Universitys Honors College will host its Undergraduate Research and Creative Arts Symposium Friday, April 27. URCAS is from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Corbett Center Student Union ballrooms on the third floor and is open to the public.
URCAS is the longest-running student symposium at NMSU and more than 2,000 students have presented at the symposium since its beginning in 1996. Undergraduate honors students will display their research projects on large poster exhibits and will also read from their written reports. The poster displays will include summaries of the students data, research methods, analysis and results. Fine arts students have also participated in URCAS by designing the program and advertising, and music students will provide a lunch-time concert of jazz favorites. URCAS includes students from every academic college at NMSU.
Honors College Dean Miriam Chaiken said students who participate in UCRAS are showcasing how much they are willing to go further with their education.
Students greatly enhance their resumes and their professional profile by highlighting their achievements in research, scholarship and creative arts. Their URCAS participation shows future employers or graduate programs that these students went the extra mile to get involved in scholarship beyond just classroom assignments, said Chaiken.
She encourages everyone in the community and on campus to attend and support the students.
The community and campus will be very impressed with the accomplishments of these students, and of course students welcome an opportunity to talk about their work with interested folks. I know this comes at the end of the semester when students, faculty and staff are all very tired, but the URCAS event is always energizing as it reminds us about why we are here when we see the transformations these students exhibit, Chaiken said.
URCAS is sponsored by the NMSU Honors College, the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost Office, Discovery Scholars, the New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation, the Maximizing Access to Research Careers program, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute program, the College Assistance Migrant Program, the Building Research Achievement in Neuroscience program, the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Colleges of Business, Education and Engineering.
