WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 26, 2018) - Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after voting against the confirmation of Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Mike Pompeo as the new Secretary of State:

“As the nation's top diplomat, the Secretary of State needs to be a beacon of our fundamental American values for the world and fully embrace the important role for diplomacy in our national security.

“Mr. Pompeo’s troubling legislative and rhetorical record on civil liberties, torture, and other issues, combined with his support of President Trump’s chaotic and dangerous foreign policy undermines his ability to effectively fill this position. He has not proven that he will stand up to the President and I fear may enable his worst impulses.”
