Albuquerque, NM (May 14, 2018) Yesterday, Congressman Steve Pearce joined Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue in Albuquerque to discuss Tribal education, and the United States honoring its commitment to support Native American education.
 
"Native American history and heritage are at the very core of New Mexican culture," said Pearce. "I was honored to be able to join Secretary Perdue yesterday. Tribal colleges and universities play a vital role in not only educating the next generation of New Mexicans, but preserving and protecting Native American heritage and culture. For too long, education in rural and underserved communities in New Mexico, many of which are Tribal communities, have not received the support and assistance needed or deserved.

"The State of New Mexico, and the federal government must be working together to create educational opportunities for all New Mexicans that will allow individuals to find full-time employment and prosper. It is extremely encouraging to see Secretary Perdue dedicate time while in New Mexico to understand these institutions, the challenges they face, and how the Department of Agriculture can continue to assist the growth of education programs that provide the next generation with marketable skills. I look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Perdue and all involved to expand and promote educational choices for Tribal communities."
 
Secretary Perdue, who led the meeting, will be holding additional meetings relating to USDA initiatives on Monday.
 
"Congressman Pearce was very helpful during our visit with tribal leaders, providing great local knowledge of the issues. USDA has a special relationship with tribal colleges, and having a member of Congress at the table with us was of great benefit as we seek to expand educational and economic opportunities for tribal members," stated Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue.

BACKGROUND:
Yesterday, Congressman Pearce and United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue held a roundtable meeting with leaders from Tribal colleges. The Department of Agriculture is charged with working with Tribal colleges and universities to create and promote educational programs that prepare Tribal communities for participation in USDA related fields and services.
