Los Alamos, NM – July 10, 2018 –Los Alamos, New Mexico is the gateway to three national parks and is a hub for outdoor lovers and adventure enthusiasts throughout the summer months, and trails and open spaces are officially open again. Los Alamos County was previously under Stage III Fire Restrictions, and is now under Stage I Fire Restriction, which effectively opens up trails and open spaces for recreational use.
 
"Summertime is a time of exploration, and Los Alamos is the place where discoveries are made," said Kelly Stewart, Marketing Manager for Los Alamos County. "While we still hope our visitors will be mindful of the recent fires and practice caution, we're thrilled to have our open spaces once again usable by the public. There are vast outdoor adventures awaiting in Los Alamos, and we invite all to come explore, find your 'aha moments' and enjoy the great outdoors."

In addition to providing a perfect basecamp for touring nearby National Park sites—Valles Caldera National Preserve, Bandelier National Monument and Manhattan Project National Historical Park—Los Alamos has a 100-plus mile trail system, including trails that connect to Pajarito Mountain. Pajarito is offering bike and hike lift service every weekend through October, providing outdoor lovers a chance to explore the beautiful scenery and test their endurance with high altitude adventures.
 
"Whatever your adventure—history tours, science exploration, hiking, biking, visiting National Parks, or simply getting back to nature—you'll find it all in Los Alamos," added Stewart. "Additionally, this week we will celebrate our iconic annual event, ScienceFest, and the fire restrictions are lifted just in time for all those who are coming in from out of town to have the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities during their visit."
 
Happening July 11th–15th, ScienceFest will provide great opportunities for budding scientists and inquisitive minds of all ages to learn about the fascinating history of Los Alamos, as well as the groundbreaking scientific discoveries still being made today. For those wishing to head inside for a while and beat the heat, there are a variety of options for exploring science, history and nature. Bradbury Science Museum offers free, interactive fun for science lovers of all ages, and history buffs can become walk through time with historic walking tours or a visit to the Los Alamos History Museum. Those looking to relax can explore the galaxy by taking in a planetarium show or can take part in one of the many fun and educational events and workshops at the Los Alamos Nature Center.
 
While the Los Alamos County Fire Department still urges all to continue to exercise extreme caution and be mindful of fire safety, Stage I Fire Restrictions prohibit building open fires, campfires, and charcoal or wood stoves on County lands, and smoking except in an enclosed vehicle or building.
