Washington, DC (July 18, 2018) Congressman Pearce releases a statement regarding the refund veterans can receive who have been wrongly taxed.

More than 133,000 veterans had portions of their disability severance pay improperly held for taxes. Congress passed the Combat Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act in 2016 requiring the Department of Defense (DOD) to fix this injustice. Veterans who were wrongly taxed will receive a letter from the DOD informing them that they qualify for a refund, along with instructions on how to claim the refund. Veterans have one year from the date they receive this letter to claim their refund.

"Our nation must never forget the service and sacrifice made by our armed forces," said Pearce. "The government must always honor the commitments and promises made to those who defend our freedoms. It is completely unacceptable that over 133,000 men and women who sacrificed so much for our nation were wrongly taxed on their disability severance pay. Righting this wrong is absolutely essential and I applaud the action that is being taken on this issue. Every veteran needs to be aware of the fix that is taking place to ensure they or their fellow veterans receive the refund they deserve."
