Lea County, NM - On October 9, 2018 at about 9:45 a.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash on State Road 128 around mile post 43 west of Jal. 

The initial investigation indicated a 2013 HMDE commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driven by Jason E. Thompson (50) of Hobbs, NM was traveling west on State Road 128.  For unknown reasons the 2013 HMDE CMV crossed the center line into the opposing east bound traffic of State Road 128. The 2013 HMDE CMV crashed head on into a 2011 Heil CMV that was traveling east on State Road 128. 

Thompson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.  The driver of the 2011 Heil CMV, a twenty-five-year-old female from Universal City, TX sustained unknown injuries. A 2004 GMC, that was traveling west behind the 2013 HDME driven by a sixty-three-year-old man from Hobbs, NM impacted the crash. That driver sustained unknown injuries. 

Alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor in the crash. The victims in the Heil and GMC will not be identified by State Police.  The crash is still under investigation with no additional information currently available.
