New Mexico State Parks Deputy Director Receives Public Service Commendation

Santa Fe, NM – New Mexico State Parks deputy director Toby Velasquez received a second United States Coast Guard (Coast Guard) Public Service Commendation for outstanding contributions to recreational boating safety as a member of the National Boating Safety Advisory Council (Council) and its Prevention through People Subcommittee.

Mr. Velasquez was appointed to serve on the Council by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Charles Johnson in 2015. While on the Council, Mr. Velasquez provided notable services that assisted greatly in furthering the aims and functions of the Coast Guard. The 21-person council includes seven representatives consisting of state officials that advise the Coast Guard on boating safety regulations and a broad range of boating safety matters.

“Toby Velasquez is a true asset to the State Parks Division,” said State Park Director, Christy Tafoya. “In addition, he has contributed great knowledge to this significant National Council and is greatly deserving of this commendation.”

Velasquez started his career with State Parks as a Park Ranger in 1999, and has served as Park Manager, Regional Manager, Chief of Boating and Law Enforcement, and is currently the Deputy Director. Over the last twelve years, Velasquez has worked toward increasing public perception and awareness regarding the seriousness of boating safety through education, outreach, community involvement, partnerships and law enforcement. 

A native of the beautiful Mora Valley, and resident of the Pojoaque Valley, he is active within his community and serves on the Pojoaque Valley District School Board. Velasquez also coaches and mentors youth through non-profit organizations and promotes outdoor recreation, sportsmanship and teamwork. Velasquez is a graduate of Mora High School and alumnus of New Mexico Highlands University.

"It was an honor to serve the Coast Guard and the National Recreational Boating Safety Program," said Deputy Director Velasquez.

This was the 100th meeting of the National Boating Safety Council, and it was established by the Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971.  For more information, please visit here.
