Events and Openings

Sense of Place Gallery  will feature two artists for the month of November whose works put the icing on the cake! Stop by 63C Brewery Ave. on your artwalk to see Dennis Galloway’s photography of the Southwest and Kenny Gaynor’s upcycled sculptures.

Dennis Galloway's photographs convey the incredible geology of Granite Dells in Prescott AZ. Dennis' photography is usually featured in conventional landscape views, however his interest quickly turned to the sculptural qualities of individual rocks best expressed in B&W. His work emanates the beauty between balance and tension. This approach has been extended to include other sites within Arizona and New Mexico.

Kenny Gaynor's unique and creative expressions of repurposed art will also be featured along with his newest creations, table furniture made from forest cuts found during Kenny's firefighting assignments.

In celebration of their remodel, Y Arts will host a new opening at the Y Arts Gallery, located at 39 Howell Ave.

Tang Gallery Cooperative continues its exhibition of featured artists Laurie Giangregorio and Archie Sutton in their show of new work “Mirror 2 Mirror” after an exceptional opening reception. Visit 32 Main Street across from Café Roka to view the new paintings and works on copper.

Entertainment

The Sidepony Express Music Festival is a three-day showcase of emerging independent musical artists in Old Bisbee from November 9th-11th, 2018. In it's seventh season, this FREE alt/indie music festival blows up the Bisbee music scene. Over 85 artists are slated to perform several times throughout the weekend at a wide array of venues, including restaurants, bars, hotels, lounges, and shops. Although most of the bands make the trek from Phoenix, the lineup includes local artists and others from beyond Arizona. Genres include (loosely-labeled): indie folk, hip-hop fusion, island jam funk, experimental surf metal, Avante-pop dance rock, lo-fi garage jazz, western psychedelic soul, desert noir, and much, much more. Saturday's music begins at Noon and will play into the night until 2 am. The full lineup and locations for each day will be posted online and printed copies available at venues during the Festival.

Help keep Sidepony sustainable! This festival is (and will always be) free and open to the public. You can help maintain radness by grabbing a raffle ticket this year. Grand prize is a weekend getaway for two, plus many more fantastic goods and services from our pals. Go to the website here.

Bisbee Plein Air Festival Winners

Last month's festival was a blast, even if the weather wasn’t ideal for painting outside. The Bisbee Plein Air Festival began on Tuesday, October 9th with a plein air artists’ discussion panel hosted by the Copper Queen Library. Thursday through Saturday, artists from all over Arizona (and a few from out of state) could be seen painting Bisbee scenes to enter into this year’s competition. Artist Carol Chandler organized and lead our very first Youth Plein Air Paint Out. On Friday, we were treated to a reception for a Pop-Up Exhibit of artwork by this year’s jurors, a hands-on art activity, and a Nocturne Paint Out. On Saturday, jurors Steve Helffrich (Phoenix) and Julia Patterson (Tucson) had quite the task in judging this year’s plein air entries as Pat Panther played music for the crowd. They awarded $700 in cash prizes, which were generously funded by The Bisbee Foundation. On Sunday, the judges lead an informal critique for artists who wished to participate. Due to the rain, most events were held indoors at Central School Project. Congratulations to this year’s competition winners:

1st Prize ($300) – Cherie Evans “Winding Up Brewery”
2nd Prize ($200) – Jenny Dobbertien “Spire”
3rd Prize ($100) – Randall Cole “Night Light”
People’s Choice Award ($100) – Jenny Dobbertien “Spire”
Honorable Mention – Nancy Wesorick “Uptown/Downtown”
Honorable Mention – Rita Verri “Windy Day”
