Torrance County Commission to Reopen The Torrance County Detention Center

ESTANCIA, NM – The Torrance County Commission will consider an Intergovernmental Agreement that would reopen the Torrance County Detention Facility in Estancia during a special meeting this coming Wednesday, May 15th. The facility – owned by CoreCivic – will house detainees for the United States Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency - ICE. 

Torrance County and CoreCivic have been working with ICE for the past few months to reopen the detention center that has been closed since October of 2017.

“Torrance County and Estancia were hit hard by the closure”, said Commission Chair Ryan Schwebach. “The County was forced to transport inmates to Santa Fe County and we lost a lot of good paying jobs. I’m excited and ready to work with CoreCivic.”

When fully staffed, the facility will provide the community with over 200 jobs and house over 700 inmates. In addition, CoreCivic will provide space for Torrance County inmates – significantly reducing County detention costs.

Wednesday’s Special meeting will be held starting at 9:00am in the Commission Chambers of the Torrance County Administrative Building 205 South Ninth Street, Estancia.
