“REPORT  FROM  SANTA  FE”

This Week:  HOWIE MORALES, Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico

TOPIC:  Education In New Mexico

Sweeping Changes & Education Moonshot "Cultural Shift" In The PED

May 9, 2019 -- This week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is Howie Morales, the Lieutenant Governor of the state of New Mexico and a longtime educator. A Democrat from Grant County, Morales serves as New Mexico's 30th Lt. Governor. As Lt. Governor, Morales presides over the NM Senate during legislative sessions.

A lifetime educator, Morales holds 3 education degrees, a B.S., M.A., and Ph.D., all from New Mexico universities. Because of his extensive educational background, Governor Lujan Grisham appointed him to be the Acting Secretary for the Public Education Department (PED) while she conducted the search for the permanent Cabinet Secretary for Education.

In this interview, Morales discusses education in New Mexico and the sweeping changes in education set into motion during the recent 60-Day Legislative Session. He speaks about the “education moonshot,” which directs nearly $500 million into the classroom, as well as improvements in early childhood education. He also explores the "cultural shift" in the PED and details movement toward a more collaborative relationship with New Mexico's schools.

Morales served in the New Mexico Senate for eleven years, representing District 28. He held seats on the Legislative Finance Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, both dealing with state budget matters. He sponsored bills addressing public education, environment, and universal health care.

Hosted by veteran journalist and interviewer, Lorene Mills, REPORT FROM SANTA FE brings the very best of the esteemed, beloved, controversial, famous and emergent minds and voices of the day to a weekly audience that spans the state of New Mexico and has served as a window on what makes Santa Fe and the State of New Mexico truly unique.
