Tularosa, NM - On Sunday, July 7, 2019, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate an officer involved shooting involving the Tularosa Police Department (TPD) in Tularosa, New Mexico.

The initial investigation indicates that at around 9:00 p.m. on July 7, 2019, a TPD officer responded to a report of a male individual armed with a firearm, who was actively shooting the firearm near the Subway restaurant on 100 Central Avenue in Tularosa.

The officer arrived and located the individual, later identified as Johnny M. Vigil (43) of Tularosa. During the encounter, the officer fired his duty weapon striking Mr. Vigil. Mr. Vigil was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

This investigation is in preliminary stages. Details about the incident, to include what led up to the officer discharging his weapon, is still under investigation. The identity of the officer involved will not be released until their interviews are conducted.  Additional information will be given out via press release when available.
