Lea County, NM - On July 11, 2019 at about 7:00 a.m. the New Mexico State Police along with Lea County Sheriff’s Office, Jal Police Department and area first responders were called to New Mexico State Road 128 around mile post 57 near Jal for a vehicle collision involving a crew cab pickup truck and a semi-tractor trailer. 

The initial investigation indicates that a 2019 Chevy crew cab pickup occupied by the driver and three passengers was traveling west on SR 128 and for unknown reasons crossed the center line into east bound traffic colliding head on with an east bound 2019 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer occupied only by the driver.

After the collision the two vehicles caught fire.  All four occupants of the pickup and the driver of the semi-tractor trailer died on scene as a result of the crash.  They were pronounced deceased by the Office of the Medical Investigator. 

The identities of the deceased are as follows:

Crew cab pickup driver:           Arturo Barboza (22) of Odessa Texas

Crew cab passenger 1:             Alonso Hernandez (19) of Odessa Texas

Crew cab passenger 2:             Justin Brown (25) of Montgomery Texas

Crew cab passenger 3:             Enrique Leon (58) of Odessa Texas

Semi-tractor trailer driver:       Rayshawda Riley (27) of Arlington Texas

The New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit and uniform bureau continue to investigate this crash.  Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash and there is no additional information available at this time.
