NMSU and Spaceport America to Announce STEM Partnership, Unveil Spaceport America’s New Las Cruces Office

Las Cruces, NM – Arrowhead Center at New Mexico State University will host a reception celebrating Spaceport America’s new home in Las Cruces, as well as a new collaborative agreement between NMSU and Spaceport America.

The reception will take place from 4-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 4605 Research Park Circle, Suite A. Those who wish to attend are asked to RSVP here.

The reception will also celebrate the signing of a memorandum of agreement between Spaceport America and NMSU to form a collaborative effort to advance student success in the STEM fields, along with research, economic development and community outreach.

“Thanks to the continued leadership of Governor Lujan Grisham, Spaceport America is dedicated to advancing the aerospace industry and enhancing STEM education in our state,” said Dan Hicks, CEO of Spaceport America. “We’re thrilled to be a part of elevating our community’s success with New Mexico State University. Together with NMSU, we will continue to open opportunities for students, businesses, and community members wishing to take full advantage of the growing STEM and aerospace industries within New Mexico. “

Spaceport America is the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport with research, testing, leasing, educational and commercial assets. NMSU is the state’s land-grant and space-grant university, and aims to serve the diverse needs of the state through comprehensive programs in education, research, extension and outreach, and public service. The university’s strategic goals, outlined in the LEADS 2025 strategic plan, are to enhance student success and social mobility; elevate research and creativity; and amplify outreach and economic development.

According to the MOA between Spaceport America and NMSU, the strategic goals of both entities are “mutually supportive, with strong commitment to them by both organizations.”

The agreement will provide co-op and internship opportunities for NMSU students through Spaceport America in fields such as aerospace and tourism; educational events, competitions, workshops and tours for NMSU students at Spaceport America; online and classroom curriculum delivery; and certificate programs for aerospace-related workforce needs. The agreement also allows for research opportunities for NMSU faculty, staff and students, and economic development and community outreach opportunities.

“We are delighted to have Spaceport America on the NMSU campus as part of Arrowhead Park,” said NMSU Chancellor, Dan Arvizu. “Part of NMSU’s strategic plan includes deliberate actions to amplify our efforts in extension and outreach efforts. This is an exciting opportunity for us to help facilitate economic development and entrepreneurship, while leveraging collaborative efforts with industry, corporations, and other key stakeholders.”
