Top Student short films from New Mexico Colleges and Universities showing

Santa Fe- Executive Director of the New Mexico Film Foundation, Dirk Norris announced today the screenings of the third annual Student Filmmaker Showcase. Films from students attending film programs at New Mexico Post-Secondary institutions will screen in Albuquerque at the KiMo Theater on September 21, 2019 at 2pm.

The showcase highlights the talent coming out of New Mexico’s numerous film and media programs. These new voices represent the state’s future creative content producers and provides aspiring filmmakers to learn more about educational programs. Student filmmakers from across the state will connect during the event and network with other institutions for future projects.  

The New Mexico Film Foundation worked with faculty from San Juan College and Eastern New Mexico University, to develop the program. Each New Mexico Post-Secondary school was invited to submit up to 3 student videos of no more than 15 minutes each, plus and optional special effects reel of up to 1 minute in length. Nine schools submitted a total of 28 videos. This year film being shown are from Donna Anna Community College (Las Cruces), Eastern New Mexico University (Portales), Institute of American Indian Arts (Santa Fe), New Mexico Junior College (Hobbs), Northern New Mexico College (Española), San Juan College (Farmington), University of New Mexico (Taos), University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) and New Mexico State University (Las Cruces). The program provides the alumni an opportunity to see the work from their alma mater.  

“Films are meant to be seen and the student showcase gives the film students of New Mexico a chance to exhibit their work to the public and to let people see the great talents and opportunities we have in our state,” said Jon Barr, Assistant Professor of Digital Filmmaking at Eastern New Mexico University. “The screening itself also gives our future filmmakers a chance to network and build connections with their peers who will likely be future collaborators and our hope is that this will have a lasting positive impact on homegrown filmmaking in New Mexico.”

Luke Renner, Professor of Digital Media Arts and Design at San Juan College said.  “When people discuss film and media education, thoughts immediately go to programs in Los Angeles and New York; we are focused on having New Mexico Higher Education in the conversation. New Mexico has established film and media programs and offers affordable education opportunities to residents and out-of-state students in one of the country’s most active production areas.” 

“This is the third year for this program,” said Norris. “Each film school usually has its own student film screenings, but this showcase will allow students to see work that other students are making around the state. We invite the public to attend to see these great work and gain an understanding of the film programs in New Mexico.”

The screening in Albuquerque has the “Best of” films with categories including Best Cinematography, Best Writing, Best Directing, and Best Sound. Regardless of awards, at least one film from each school will screen. Students winning in specific categories receive prizes from the following sponsors Canon, Avid, Write Brothers, iZotope and Director 4.5 Notebook.
