FRIDAY in ALBUQUERQUE: Udall to Host 30th Annual Student Leadership Institute for NM High School Students, Convene a Military Medal Presentation Ceremony for NM Veterans

Udall will present military medals to All Pueblo Council of Governors Chairman E. Paul Torres and Former Isleta Tribal Councilman Diego Lujan

FRIDAY, October 4, in Albuquerque, U.S. Senator Tom Udall will host the 30th annual Student Leadership Institute in Albuquerque and convene a military medal presentation ceremony at Isleta Pueblo for All Pueblo Council of Governors Chairman E. Paul Torres and Former Isleta Tribal Councilman Diego Lujan.

Udall will host the 30th Student Leadership Institute (SLI) for New Mexico high school juniors and seniors to discuss policy issues that affect New Mexico and the nation. The SLI location has alternated between Northern and Southern New Mexico, and this year, it will be held at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center, Albuquerque.

More than 100 students from 26 schools throughout New Mexico will attend the half-day conference designed to increase awareness about government and public policy. Participants will attend seminars hosted by members of Udall's Washington, D.C. legislative staff, and conclude the day with a group conversation with Udall where they can discuss what they learned and ask about issues that interest them. Media are invited to attend all or part of the conference.

Later in the morning, Udall will convene a military medal presentation ceremony at Isleta Pueblo for All Pueblo Council of Governors Chairman E. Paul Torres and former Isleta Tribal Councilman Diego Lujan.  In July of this year, Senator Udall interviewed Chairman Torres, a U.S. Navy and Vietnam veteran, as part of the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project.  When Udall’s office learned that Torres did not have the discharge documentation and medals he was entitled to, Udall’s staff worked to obtain the medals that will be presented on Friday. Udall will also present medals to former Councilman Lujan, a U.S. Air Force and Vietnam veteran.

Media: Please RSVP news@tomudall.senate.gov to attend either or both events.

"Each year, I look forward to hosting the Student Leadership Institute and meeting with some of New Mexico's best and brightest students. This year, I'm pleased to host the conference in Albuquerque New Mexico with students from across the region," Udall said. "This event provides a unique opportunity for high school students to learn more about government and public policy. I hope SLI will expand students' interests and inspire the next generation of New Mexico leaders to stay engaged in the policy issues that impact them."

Former U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman started the Student Leadership Institute in 1988, and passed sponsorship of the conference to Udall when he retired. Seminar topics include economic development; environment and public lands; energy development; immigration; national security; and budget priorities. Udall will host a simultaneous session on education policy for educators who accompany students to the conference.
