The Walk for Apraxia® celebrates children with apraxia of speech and recognizes them for their hard work. Families, professionals, students, and other supporters join together to lift up children with apraxia of speech, because they believe every child deserves a voice.
El Paso – (October 8, 2019) – The 2019 El Paso Walk for Apraxia event will be held on October 26, 2019 at the Marty Robbins Park to benefit children with apraxia of speech. Registration begins at 8:00 AM with the Walk beginning at 9:00 AM.
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that makes it difficult for children to speak. Children with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech generally have a good understanding of language and know what they want to say. However, they have difficulty learning or carrying out the complex sequenced movements that are necessary for intelligible speech. The Walk for Apraxia is held across the country as a means to heighten awareness and raise funding in the hopes that all children with apraxia may have access to the support they need to find their voices. The Walk is open to all adults and children. Proceeds from the Walk for Apraxia benefit the mission of Apraxia Kids.
“The Walk for Apraxia is a fun-family friendly event. It is for children who have Apraxia of speech,” said Walk Coordinator Sarah Loveless. “Apraxia of speech is a neurological speech disorder that reflects an impaired capacity to plan our movements necessary for speech. This walk allows family members to develop a supportive community. It helps every child with Apraxia to realize that they are not alone. It brings awareness of the disorder to others and pushes professionals to know what resources to provide.”
Raising awareness is one of the most tangible ways that communities at large can help children with apraxia thrive. Collective increased awareness means that children will be diagnosed faster, resulting in better, earlier intervention.
