New Mexicans have a special opportunity for the next two weekends to obtain driver’s licenses and IDs and conduct any other MVD business as part of the state’s Standard License rollout.

The Motor Vehicle Division will have special Saturday office hours at the following eight offices from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, October 12, and again on Saturday October 19.

The new Standard License is an alternative to the Real ID license. New Mexicans can obtain a Standard License with as little as one document proving identity and age and two documents proving New Mexico residency.

The Standard Driver’s Licenses and IDs do not satisfy federal Real ID requirements and after October 1, 2020 will not be valid for boarding commercial airline flights or for entering certain federal facilities. However, private establishments and state and local government agencies in New Mexico that accept REAL ID credentials as identification by law must also accept Standard Licenses and ID cards.

The requirements for a Real ID license are established by federal law and have not changed. Other documents, such as a valid passport, also can be used for Real ID purposes. A complete list of Real ID credentials is available at TSA.gov.

New Mexicans interested in obtaining either the Standard or the Real ID license should make sure they have the necessary documents before making the trip to an MVD office. Lists of acceptable documents for Standard and Real ID licenses are available at mvd.newmexico.gov. Use the pull-down menu titled Driver’s Licenses/ID’s to find the appropriate list.

If your current license is valid or expired for less than one year, you may be able to obtain a Standard License on line at mvd.newmexico.gov.
