Heinrich Joins Legislation to Address Housing Affordability

The Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act would build over 14,000 new affordable homes in New Mexico over the next decade

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) is cosponsoring the bipartisan Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act, legislation introduced by Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Todd Young (R-Ind.), to help build over 14,000 new affordable homes in New Mexico over the next decade as many families struggle to find an affordable place to call home.

"We have a serious housing crisis in New Mexico. It demands real solutions that match the complexity and gravity of the situation," said Heinrich. "I'm proud to join this bipartisan effort that confronts the growing need for affordable housing by updating and expanding the most effective tool we have for developing affordable housing: the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. Every New Mexican deserves a safe and secure place to call home, and this legislation is an important step toward meeting that goal and investing in a better, more stable future for all."

Two NMSU students receive Society for American Archaeology awards

NMSU anthropology graduate students Anastasia Walhovd and Keely Yanito received the Society for American Archaeology National Science Foundation Scholarship for Archaeological Training for 2022 and 2023. These scholarships support archaeological training or a research program for Native American students or employees of tribal cultural preservation programs.

For Walhovd, a master's degree in anthropology will help her learn more about her own history. Her research will take her back to a site on a reservation near the Great Lakes. She is a member of a federally recognized tribe, the Redcliffe Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, but she prefers to be known as Ojibwe. "I'm from Wisconsin. I grew about 20 minutes off the reservation in far northern Wisconsin, right on Lake Superior outside of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore or National Park Service Land," Walhovd said.

Yanito, who earned the 2023 NSF award, is Navajo and currently engaged in the archaeological field school at Cottonwood Spring Pueblo this summer. She is a graduate teaching assistant and loves assisting undergraduates with their first field experiences.

Able to successfully accomplish its primary goal, Virgin Galactic's Galactic 01 flight served as its first commercial spaceflight. House Speaker Condemns SCOTUS Decision Overturning Affirmative Action

Santa Fe, N.M. - Today, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions, overturning decades of precedent. New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martínez (D-Albuquerque) issued the following statement in response.

"Once again, a rogue Supreme Court is endangering Americans' fundamental rights, freedoms, and protections. By rolling back decades of progress toward racial equity in education, we risk repeating a long, dark history of discrimination and exclusion within the very system intended to foster opportunity.

In New Mexico, we value the unique cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives of our neighbors and understand that prioritizing diversity and inclusion within our institutions makes us stronger, smarter, and more equitable. We must keep pushing for policies that give every person a fair shot and deliver on the promise of equal access to education for all."
