florenciogarcia 01Florencio M. Garcia, affectionately known as "Lencho," 85, of Bayard, N.M., went to be with the Lord on May 21, 2018. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family during the last days of his life. Florencio was born on September 3, 1932, in Santa Rita N.M. to Miguel and Bruna Garcia. Florencio grew up in Bayard with 6 brothers and 3 sisters. He started working with Chino Mines Company in 1951 and 44 years later, retired in 1995. He served his country in the United States Army from 1953 -1955 and continued serving for 20 years in the Army Reserve.

Florencio married his wife, Magdalena Alires, from Santa Clara N.M., on November 16, 1963, enjoying 54 years together. Together, they made Bayard their home where they raised their 3 children. Florencio was a hard-working, supportive and loving person. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a happy, content man, who never complained and never had anything negative to say. Saying "No" or "I can't" were rarely communicated. He loved to be outside tinkering or working in his yard, tending to his century plants. It gave him great pleasure to talk to people about Santa Rita, being born "In Space", the copper mines, the Army and the native plants. He loved going to summer camp as a member of the Army reserves. He was an active member of the American Legion Post No. 18 for many years until he could no longer physically serve. He took pride in being a member of the color guard and honoring fallen comrades. He loved to travel and was very proud of his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife, Magdalena Garcia of Bayard; a daughter, Denise Orsini and husband Chris of Salem, Connecticut; 2 sons, Thomas Garcia of Bayard, and Eloy Garcia and wife Angelina of Glendale, Arizona. Five grandchildren, Larissa and Alexandra Garcia, Nathan, Madeleine and Marcus Orsini. Two brothers, Santiago "Jimmy" Garcia of Santa Clara, Manuel Garcia and wife Terry of Bayard. Three sisters, Esperanza "ChaCha" Sosaya and husband Richard of Silver City, Mary Marin of Bayard, and Carmen Garcia of Bayard. Numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Miguel and Bruna Garcia, brothers, Ramon "Ray" Garcia and wife Clorinda, Miguel Garcia, Jose "Joe" Garcia and wife Elena, Juan Garcia and wife Demesia "Mecha." Florencio was a wonderful and generous husband and a great example of a father and grandfather who was adored by all his grandchildren and will be greatly missed.
