unnamed 1Calvin C. Watkins, 95, of Silver City, New Mexico passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2019 in El Paso, Texas. A private burial will be held at a later date. He was born in Atlanta, Kentucky. Calvin is survived by one sister, Sandra Seay; brother-in-law Dexter; niece Sherry Zufelt, and her son Jacob; one nephew Albert Seay, and his son Jason. He is preceded in death by his parents, Riley R. Watkins and Lettie Chestnut.

watkins 2Calvin loved working on his flower bed, a hard worker, loved painting and mosaic art. He graduated when he was 16 yrs. old from high school, then taught in a one room schoolhouse for 2 years then got drafted for 2 years in the Army, stationed in Germany. After two years in the army he moved to Silver City, NM and attended Western College, during which time he was member of play makers and performed in several plays. After graduating taught school in El Paso, Texas. He attended radio school in Phoenix, AZ. Was a DJ in Carlsbad, NM at a radio station KAVE he had a nickname of Kentucky Cal. He went to California taught school for a few years, then attended a college in Hawaii to get his master’s in special education, went back to California and taught special education. He and his friend George Kunzelman moved to Silver City, NM, bought land, and started building a trailer park, during that time he worked as a DJ for KSIL. The trailer parked was named Western Palms.
