I am deeply concerned about the keynote speech given at the recent commencement ceremony at Western New Mexico University. Part of the speech referenced a story in which a student described a sexual assault. The story was—believe it or not—intended to be funny. It was not. Indeed, it was outrageous.

At no time, and in no context, is sexual assault a joke.

WNMU’s response, made four days later, relies on “the times were much different” to explain away the offensive comment and asserts freedom of speech to refrain from criticizing the speaker.

WNMU presented the incident as a “special learning opportunity,” - I doubt most women and sexual assault victims would agree. I cannot imagine the pain felt by victims witnessing a keynote speaker making light of what was likely the most traumatic experience of their lives. But I feel for those victims. And I stand with them.

There is little doubt that the speaker’s story was offensive and unacceptable. Victims deserve better. We all deserve better.

I call on us men to step up as partners, friends, husbands, fathers and allies of all women who’ve endured rape culture in all its forms. Their perseverance is heroic, but they cannot change our culture alone. Which is why myself and my brothers must do all we can to listen to victims, wholeheartedly accept their experiences, and confidently put our foot down when such indifference is present.
