SUMMARY:Women in Music: House Concert Series featuring Farah Siraj and Kiran Ahluwalia
DESCRIPTION:WNMU Cultural Affairs new virtual series, Women in Music, will take advanta
ge of current circumstances to allow for a more intimate conversation with
artists via Zoom. In the first of our "House concert" style series, we will
meet, listen to, and talk with two trailblazing artists, Farah Siraj of Jo
rdan and Kiran Ahluwalia of India. There will be opportunity to ask questio
ns. Please feel free to submit questions in advance.\nKiran Ahluwalia is a
modern exponent of the great vocal traditions of India and Pakistan which s
he honors intensely yet departs from in masterful, personal ways. Her origi
nal compositions embody the essence of Indian music while embracing influen
ces from Mali and Western blues, rock, R & B and nuances of jazz. Ahluw
alia creates boundary-breaking songs that invite us to explore the human co
ndition, transcending the self by losing ourselves in a trance of groove an
d melody. \nFarah Siraj balances a career that spans the United States, Eur
ope and the Middle East. She has performed at the United Nations, Nobel Pri
ze Hall, and The Kennedy Center. She represents Jordan annually on United N
ations World Peace Day. Farah’s musical releases include her albums, Nomad,
the Arabian Jazz Project and Dunya, with songs in English, Arabic and Span
ish. As a humanitarian, Farah focuses on raising awareness about the conseq
uences of war and violence, and advocates for women's rights, refugee right
s and animal rights.\nRegister HERE. (https://wnmu.zoom.us/meeting/register
